for JOHN JOHNSON:
Mary and John Johnson went to Texas and had 15 children. Married
22 Oct 1810, Hardeman Co., TN (other chart says Overton Co., TN-
did county name change?)
John (Johnny) Johnson d. about 1852/3, Lamar Co., TX (possible
brother to James Johnson who m. Nancy Chisum, dau of John Chisum-??)
On Aug 19 1837, in Hardeman Co., TN, John Johnson who was about
to move to Texas, left a power of atty with his son, James to
transact business, collect debts and make deed to the tract of
land where he lived on the Hatchie River. It was registered 17
Jan 1838 and cancelled on 9 Apt. 1839 by both parties when John
returned for a visit to Tennessee.
A letter found among the Balmer Papers relates from Polly's
father James to his parents Elijah and Lucy of an illness Polly
was suffering after her first child was born. 29 July 1811. (See
notes of James StewartChisum for letter)
The Mallary book states: "Mary Chisum, oldest daughter of
James Chisum and granddaughter of Thomas and Anne Eppes Gibbons,
married John Johnson in 1810 in Hardeman Co., TN. After the death
of James and Elizabeth Gibbons Chisum, around 1840, the whole
family began "going west" until by the time Texas was a
state, most of the Chisums were in Texas. James Johnson, their
only son, married Nancy Chisum granddaughter. of Elijah Chisum.
Upon the death of John and Mary Johnson the estate was left to be
divided equally among his named children. It was a large estate...The
records are in the Paris Co., TX court house. Marilyn Lynch says
that she has heard there were more children of John and Mary
Johnson, but at the time of the settlement, only the ten named
children received a share..."Each child received #3,467.64
in cash on 28 Nov 1853".
In 1860, Nacogdoches Co., TX census A .A. Johnson (male), age 15?
Johnson (female), age 12; Permelia Johnson, age 10 and Kaufman
Johnson, age 8, are found living in the household of James Jacobs(who
m Mary Chisum, dau . of old Elijah). Other minors in their
household are Samuel Chisum, age 8, Rebecca Chisum, age 6, Nancy
Chisum, age 4 and John Chisum, age 4.
These Johnson children in Jacobs household are possible
grandchildren of this John and Mary Johnson. (see Mary Chisum
& James Jacobs in old Elijah section).
At this point I don't know the parents of the Chisum minors.
Received John Johnson line from M. Louise (Click) McPherson,
Canyon Lake, TX
John told people he was orphaned early. Eva Turner Clark states
he was the son of Duncan Johnson who died 1820 in Madison Co. TN
There was a Duncan Johnson in that area, but he appeared on the
1823 Hardeman Co. TN. tax list. Mrs. Clark offered no proof of
this son/father relationship in any of her works that Louise
McPherson viewed.
