Notes
for EDMOND GIBBONS:
Information on the line of Edmond Gibbons comes from Nelda and
Michael Teakell, Lafayette, Louisiana. Michael is a descendant.
Descendant Michael Teakell of Lafayette, LA says that Edmond is
believed to be the 6th child, of 11, I show him as the 5th.
Edmond lived to be 100 years old. He died in 1879 and is buried
in the Clay Springs Cemetery in Overton Co. Edmond married
Margarett Macy, who was born in Ireland on Nov 19, 1788 and died
in 1885. Edmond and Margarett also had eleven children, most of
whom were born in Overton Co.
Edmond, Sr. bought his large tract of land after the government
acquired thousands of acres of "hunting ground" from
the Indians. The purchase price was 25 cents per acre. When
Edmond and James married, their father gave large tracts of land
and several slaves each. The Gibbons family owned a rather large
number of slaves and at one time there was as lave cemetery near
the Clay Springs Cem. The slave cabins were still standing in the
early part of this century.

Feb 1784.
Joell served in the Rev. War in Amherst militia, E.
There is a controversy about who Joell was married to, The VA
Hist. Mag. Vol. 33 p. 305, says he m. Sally Gibbons, d/o Thomas

Rebecca Cross, wife of Edward, Decd. made a deed will in Hawkins

From the book by Barbara R. Brown, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Thomas, Elijah, Joell and younger children. This will has been
the only early Gillenwater will found, and because of this many
earlier researchers have said: "Thomas and Martha are the
parents of James, Thomas, Elisha, John , Joshua, Elijah, Joell,
Keziah Wright, Elizabeth Simmons, and the wife of Robert Cross".
I contend, because of proven ages on some of these people, there
were at least two different families.

Joel Gillenwater and his family of Hawkins Co.,
The name of Joel Gillenwaters appears first on the records of
Hawkins Co. as a member of the Grand Jury in 1810. The name of
Gillenwaters appears on the records of South Carolina and it is
not improbable that the Hawkins Co. family came to the Watauga
Valley from there.
