Notes for III T
HOMAS GIBBONS:
Thomas Gibbons was born in Charles Parish, York Co., Virginia, 30 Oct 1734, and died, 1809, in Hawkins Co. Ten. He was the eldest son of John Gibbons, grandson of Thomas Gibbons(sheriff of York in 169-), and great-grands on of Thomas Gibbons, active in Bacon's Rebellion. When Thomas was about fourteen years of age, his parents in 1746 removed to that part of Surry Co. which, in 1754, became Sussex. He married Anne, daughter of Edward Eppes of Sussex Co .

Records of Albermarle Parish show they continued to live in Sussex for the next l0 years. Where they lived in the following decade is not known, but in 1787 the first Court of Hawkins Co., N. C. (later Tennessee) was held at his house (State Records of North Carolina, XXIV. 831), and it was here that his death occurred in 1809. His will of that year does not mention his wife, so she was probably already dead . He wishes his estate to be equally divided among the following children: Thomas Gibbons, Nancy Howard, Betsy Chisholm, Edmond Gibbons , Sally Gillenwater, and Epps Gibbons, and a child's share to be equally divided among grandchildren, Nancy, Isham, Garrett Fitzgerald, and Elizabeth Babb, children of daughter, Molly Fitzgerald. Two hundred pounds in lieu of land is bequeathed to son Edmond Gibbons, over and above his share, he to be executor with son-in-law , William Howard . Following children, having already received their share, are bequeathed one dollar each: Rebecca Bell, John Gibbons, and James Gibbons.

Historical Southern Families, Vol XVII, Edited by Mrs. John Bennett Boddie, Genealogical Pub. Co. Inc. Baltimore 1972

According to the book Tennessee Cousins- pg 197-Thomas Gibbons, Sr . was born and raised in old Albermarle Parish, in Surrey Co., VA. He married Anne Eppes, the daughter of Col. Edward Eppes, who settled in the upper parts of Knox Co., near the line of Grainger and later Claiborne Co. This Thomas Gibbons, Sr. was the father of the Thomas Gibbons who was on the first Grand jury.

The Albermarle Parish Register kept by Rev. William Wylie, the Rector, in those old days, shows the children of Thomas and Anne Eppes Gibbons.
