6. WILLIAM EMERY6 HANSARD (JAMES CROFFORD (CRAWFORD)5, JESSE BROWN4, WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, RICHARD1) was born August 23, 1843
in Forsythe Co., Georgia, and died July 16, 1925 in San Marcos,
Texas. He married LUCINDA AUGUSTA BENSON February 27, 1865, daughter of WILLIS BENSON and MAHULDA KYLE. She was born November 27, 1848 in
Forsythe Co., Georgia, and died July 06, 1932 in San Marcos,
Texas.
Notes
for WILLIAM EMERY HANSARD:
He served in the Confederate States of America during the War
between the States, in the 43rd Regt. Stovall's 46th Brigade,
Stewart's Div., Army of the Tenn. His granddaughter, Opal Brumley
Smith, has in her possession a Confederate Pension envelope in
which she says Lucinda received a Civil War Pension (apparently
for her husband's Civil War Service.) The envelope is clearly
post dated "Feb. 27, 1928" and under the return address
is clearly printed "Confederate Pension", showing a
picture of the colored Confederate flag. Some descendants have
also claimed that Hulda served as a nurse during the Civil War (but
this has not been verified and it is not known if she received
compensation for this service.) The Pension envelope might have
been for-her service, which seems doubtful.
Descendants claim that about 1904 the family moved from Denton Co.,
to Memphis, Tex.,.along with the family of their oldest daughter,
Hulda "Gustin" and her husband J. R. Brumley. Their
granddaughter, Maidee Thompson, remembers her grandfather Hansard
as being a rather reserved and quiet man, but one time when she
was 11 or 12 years old and was studying piano, he visited in
their home in Memphis and when she played "Dixie" he
let out a Rebel yell that really startled her. She also remembers
that her mother and her aunt Oshia, who were about the same age,
laughing about what a disciplinarian their grandfather was. All
he had to do to make them behave was to clear his throat, but
that he was always very good to them.
When William E. and Lucinda celebrated their 50th (Golden)
Wedding anniversary in 1915, a write-up in the local paper
included a picture of the couple and five of their six surviving
children. It claimed that they were parents of 12 children, and
that the five present for their Anniversary Celebration were: Mr.
and Mrs. J. C. Hansard of Memphis, Tex., A. J. Hansard of Rotan,
Tex., Mrs. J. R. Brumley of Edinburg, Tex., and Mrs. Ernest
Jackson and Dewitt Hansard of San Antonio, Tex.
Four years later another picture appeared in the local paper, in
whiclh' four generations of the Hansard family were represented,
entitled "Four Generations, Hale and Hearty." This
picture included William Emery, his daughter Mrs. J. R. Brumley,
her daughter Mrs. W. A. Thompson, and her son Larry Thompson.
This article stated that William Emery, then 76 years of age,
lived with his wife at 2601 West Houston Street, and that six of
their children were still living. It also stated that William
Emery lived in San Antonio for eight years and that, "despite
his years, Mr. Hansard is very active, being very fond of outdoor
sports and is an expert horseman."
